Trim your Wick

Trim your wick to about ¼ inch or about 6mm long before each and every burn and you will see your candle at its glowing glory every time.

Remove any debris from the top of the wax, this ensures an even burn and you won’t have a mess of old charred wick in your melting wax. 

A great way to trim the wick are scissors but as the wax burns lower in the container it can get a little tricky, ideally use a wick trimmer it works well and is long enough to reach deep down inside large candles, they even have a small ‘shelf’ to hold the cut wick to prevent it from falling in the wax. In a pinch nail scissors work well to get the job done. 

HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY WICK IS TOO LONG

You will see that your wick is getting too long if it forms a mushroom shape, as you will see in our picture. If your candle is lit, blow it out, trim the wick and relight for a better burn. We like to wait until the wax has gone hard and then trim this prevents the excess wick falling in the hot wax which is difficult to remove without making a mess.

Candles with trimmed wicks last longer, you will lower the chances of a smoking candle and you will avoid the nasty black soot build up around the rim of the vessel caused by a wick that’s too long. If this happens, wait till the wax has gone hard and using a baby wipe or damp paper towel, wipe the inside rim of the glass to remove any soot build up and leave your candle looking as good as new.
